Emily’s List recognized the outstanding contributions of Congresswoman Gabby Giffords in an awards night this week.  Giffords continues to be an inspiration as she recovers from the horrific shooting in January 2011.  The video is a beautiful tribute to her, showing her dedication to her constituents as well as her indomitable spirit.  The post includes a bonus link to the new HBO show VEEP, starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus – check it out and see if she may have drawn inspiration for the role from anyone you know…

John Boehner and others pretend not to know what people mean by the GOP War on Women.  As if all the other evidence is not enough, thirty-one GOP Senators voted against the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act.  This act, originally drafted by then-Senator Biden and others, has been reauthorized several times since it was first enacted in 1994, including by unanimous vote; but now, bowing to Republican extremism, the GOP men once again showed their disdain for women by opposing this legislation.  Kathleen names names, and most of the usual suspects are on the list.  I am glad to report that some people are becoming disenchanted with this extremism; here is a good article from the Washington Post saying bluntly that it is the Republicans who are the problem Kathleen also reminded us of the marches around the country to oppose the War on Women.  (Don’t get mad; get even. Vote.)

Time to lighten up a little!  President Obama is a guy who likes to have a little fun, and he’s not above making himself the butt of the joke – and friends and foes alike as well.  So it was on Saturday night, as he opened with a reference to the raid on the bin Laden compound in Pakistan that was taking place at the same time as the jokes and drinks were flowing at last year’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner.  Except Donald Trump was once again the First Goat.  He was not alone -- Democrats and Republicans alike, and even a few dogs got into the act.  Adding to the hilarity was a great and very rare mention by the President of Sarah Palin – hahahaha, she is probably still stewing and plotting some Twitter or Facebook revenge!  Enjoy a good laugh at her expense…

Some Comments and Links:

Azure Ghost (in response to Palin’s Earth Day screed):  Sounds like Palin supports giving Mother Earth forced transvaginal ultrasounds.

Brownfox:  I find the whole concept of there being more than one churches absurd. All of them believe in a God, believe Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, and yet bicker among themselves over silly matters, neglecting the core of Jesus' message - peace and love and personal purity and integrity.  Maybe that is why the kind Lord has to send somebody every now and then with messages relevant for the current times. He sent us Gandhi, sent you Martin Luther King Jr,... His compassion is endless, and nearly so is our stupidity! :-(

Juicyfruityy found this on DailyKosJoe Biden's bumper sticker: 'bin Laden's dead and General Motors is alive'

Psalm023:  When I see Mitt and Marc Rubio standing together, they look to me like Batman and Robin.

Peacepax (picking up on cheeriogirl’s comment): "GOP has declared war on kids, students, the poor, middle class, those of us with pre-existing condition and our veterans!"  Sounds like the GOP has declared war on the USA

Linda:  Two must read articles:   The New York Times .....TheAmnesia Candidate by Paul Krugman

Sassy pointed out this excellent article: Plutocrats Deserve Public Scorn.

The Last Word:  from President Eisenhower’s Farewell Address (H/T cheeriogirl):
Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, signifies in the final sense a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed.
Here in America we are descended in blood and in spirit from revolutionists and rebels – men and women who dare to dissent from accepted doctrine. As their heirs, may we never confuse honest dissent with disloyal subversion.
I find war detestable but those who praise it without participating in it even more so.
We will bankrupt ourselves in the vain search for absolute security.
When people speak to you about a preventive war, you tell them to go and fight it. After my experience, I have come to hate war.

Special request from Kathleen:

I think that most readers will remember Ann Strongheart, one of the Alaskan "Anonymous Bloggers" who amongst other things  helped arrange the dispersal of tons of food packages to various communities during the food crisis that hit west rural Alaska in early 2009. The huge humanitarian disaster was due to a combination of extreme weather and high fuel prices. This was the humanitarian crisis that Sarah Palin did her best to ignore until she was forced to make an appearance with her good friend Franklin Graham.  Palin's solution to the problems facing rural Alaska was to advise young people to leave their villages to find temporary work. You can read a good synopsis of the crisis here.

Since the tragic death of her husband, Segundo, Ann has left blogging behind and has focused her energies on bringing up her two daughters CeCe, who is autistic, and Glenna. On Saturday May 5, Ann, CeCe and Glenna are participating in a fundraiser activity to raise money for Hope Community Resources which helps children with disabilities. They are anxious to support the organisation because CeCe and the family have benefited from it and they want to be able to give back a little.

If you would like to support Ann, CeCe and Glenna in their efforts please click on this link which will take you to Ann's personal fundraising page on the Hope community Resources website and click on the sponsor me button. In the past Ann has contributed a lot of her time and energy towards helping others and she is still doing so. All the money raised stays in Alaska, none of the fund raised dollars go towards salaries but directly benefit the lives of people who choose Hope's services.

UPDATE: Message from CeCe

"I am Cecelia Strongheart.  I am 4 1/2 years old and I am developmentally disabled.  I am just one of the people the Hope Community Resources help everyday.  Please sponsor me and my mom and sister for this walk.  My sister and I have been building our stamina nearly everyday out walking with Mommy.  I can now walk 3 miles and my 2 year old sister is up to 2 miles a day.  We are excited about this walk and hope that you can sponsor us. I need your help to get closer to my goal!"

Speeches by Barack Obama and Jimmy Kimmel at the White House Correspondents' Dinner 2012 - PLUS: Shockwaves go through Alaska - The "Juneau Empire" makes fun of Sarah Palin!

By Patrick

The White House Correspondents' Dinner is one of these events which is missing in all other countries of the world, as far as I can see - which is a real shame, as such an event should be mandatory for every head of government. Being forced to joke about yourself as well as about your opponents and the media is very revealing. Such a speech can go disastrously wrong, as for example George W. Bush poved when he joked about not finding WMD several years ago. However, if you are a head of government with a great sense of humour, and if you also come across as authentic, intelligent and confident, then such a speech can be a really good one and can also reveal a lot of good things about yourself. President Obama demonstrated this again last night with a very witty speech.

The pitbull joke was genius. There is one thing that Sarah Palin, the has-been GOP-starlett, really hates: Somebody joking about her in public, and her being unable to go on Fox and deliver a long rant about it. The pitbull joke tied in extremely nicely with the satire anti-Obama spot, which was also hilarious. President Obama was absolutely right: Last time, the kids were "off limits", but this time, dogs are not. This was so good, it could have been a segment on the "Daily Show." All the jabs at Romney in Obama's speech were great and well deserved.

Here is Obama's complete speech:

Here is Jimmy Kimmel's performance:

BONUS:

Oh boy, some journalist in Alaska is going to get fired once the combined Palin-clan has started to turn on him and his paper!

An Alaskan journalist named Geoff Kirsch apparently publishes a satire column called "slack tide" at the "Juneau Empire" on a regular basis. Nearly three years after Sarah Palin stepped back from the Governorship, it seems that the Alaskan media is finally "ready" to make Sarah Palin the subject of home-grown satire.

So today Geoff Kirsch wrote a really funny and stingy column about Sarah Palin - and he should be happy if he doesn't receive any death threats and will only be expelled for life from Alaska as a punishment. ;-)

Big h/t to our reader KatieAnnieOakley!

Sarah Louise Heath Palin (born Feb. 11, 1964) is a politician and political commentator — also known as a “pundititian” — a tabloid mainstay, a television personality and what some people might call an “author.”

Palin is currently Alaska’s second-largest export and, unlike its first, just when you think she’s past peak production, she drills down and hosts the “Today” show or something.

Sarah Palin also enjoys naming her children after inanimate objects.

As Republican nominee for Vice President of the United States in the 2008 presidential election, Palin was the first and probably last Alaskan to appear on a major party’s national ticket. She was also the first Republican woman nominated for the vice presidency, though the title of the first female VP nominee in general belongs to Geraldine Ferraro. But she never got a series on TLC.

Sarah Palin’s first book sold more than two million copies, doing so well, in fact, she released a companion video game: “Going Rogue,” a first-person shooter (mostly at wolves, from inside a helicopter).

Millions also tuned in to her Alaska-based TV show, the creatively titled “Sarah Palin’s Alaska,” a program intended to highlight “the wonder and majesty of Alaska,” by which she meant the wonder and majesty accessible to someone traveling with a film crew, a phalanx of assistants and her own hair and makeup team, in addition to Kate Gosselin. Plus eight.

(...)

On Aug. 29, 2008, Republican presidential candidate John McCain named Sarah Palin as his running mate, forever changing the fortune of rimless eyeglass manufacturers everywhere.

Reactions to Palin’s nomination were mixed, mostly centered on her lack of experience — or surplus of experience, depending on which cable news network you were watching. Regardless, Sarah Palin demonstrated an ability to read off a teleprompter. When push comes to shove, that’s all she really needed to be able to do.

Even though she and McCain lost the election, Sarah Palin set herself up for four years of will she/won’t she tension that makes for great television, ultimately deciding not to seek the Republican presidential nomination for 2012. But not before starting a political action committee, embarking on a high-profile cross-country bus tour and writing two books, “Going Rogue: An American Life” and its sequel “Going Rogue 2: Electric Boogaloo.” (Note: she later changed this title to “America by Heart.”)

A lifelong registered Republican, Palin has also been associated with the Tea Party and the Tea Party Express, which is like the Tea Party, only with a more limited menu and no seating area.

In August 2009, Sarah Palin caused a stir by coining the phrase “death panel,” to describe health care reform. This is not to be confused with “death paneling,” which is what a goth kid uses to finish the walls in his rumpus room.

Palin again made news in June 2011, when the state of Alaska released more than 24,000 pages of emails from her gubernatorial tenure. Most of these turned out to be forwards of “lolcats” between her and Levi Johnston.

31 GOP Men Vote Against "Violence Against Women Act". Susan Sarandon Supports "Unite Against The War On Women" Rally

By Kathleen

It's finally nearly here! Saturday April 28th is the day that the GOP has been dreading for weeks as it is the day when women and supportive men across every state in America finally get the chance to remind those who have been systematically stripping women of their rights that "Enough is Enough".

The war on American women is real. It affects women's health issues, women's reproductive rights, crimes against women and workplace equality. It also interferes with an American woman's relationship with her doctor.

If anyone doubts that the war on women actually exists then they need look no further than the not so subtle attack by the 31 GOP senate men who voted yesterday against the Violence Against Women Act. Marco Rubio who is presently rumoured to be a possible running mate for Mitt Romney also voted against the act.

GOP Senate members who voted against the Violence Against Women Act:

Barrasso (R-WY)
Blunt (R-MO)
Boozman (R-AR)
Burr (R-NC)
Chambliss (R-GA)
Coburn (R-OK)
Cochran (R-MS)
Cornyn (R-TX)
DeMint (R-SC)
Enzi (R-WY)
Graham (R-SC) Grassley (R-IA)
Hatch (R-UT)
Inhofe (R-OK)
Isakson (R-GA)
Johanns (R-NE)
Johnson (R-WI)
Kyl (R-AZ)
Lee (R-UT)
Lugar (R-IN)
McConnell (R-KY)
Moran (R-KS) Paul (R-KY)
Risch (R-ID)
Roberts (R-KS)
Rubio (R-FL)
Sessions (R-AL)
Shelby (R-AL)
Thune (R-SD)
Toomey (R-PA)
Wicker (R-MS)

I hope that this further campaign against women will encourage some of our readers to attend a rally in their state where they will get the opportunity to connect with others who believe that the war on women has to stop. If any readers do plan to attend an event please send us photos and reports and I will post as many of them as I can.

If you want to attend and add your voice to speak out against the suppression of women's rights the following list shows the time and place of the meetup points across the states of the USA. More info at www.unitewomen.org:

Emily's List Presents Gabby Giffords With The "We Are Emily" Award - BONUS: Watch the first episode of the excellent HBO-comedy "Veep" online!

By Kathleen

Photo from Kristen Gillibrand (Twitter). Gabby shopping with Kristen before tonight's dinner.
This evening Emily's List will honour Congresswoman Gabby Giffords for her leadership and service in Congress with the coveted "We Are Emily" award.

Since the devastating and unforgettable incident in January 2011, during which she was shot in the head, Gabby has courageously, step by step, pushed forward in her recovery and continues to do so. In an emotional ceremony this past January Gabby resigned her seat in Congress and vowed that she would fight her way back. This is the determination of a person who is a real fighter -- quitting is not a word in this brave woman's vocabulary.

Here is the beautiful video which Emily's List will premier at the award ceremony this evening:

Gabrielle Giffords is a woman who inspires and is a wonderful example of decency and civility. Unlike Sarah Palin who could not wait to overshadow the discourse with her claims of "blood libel". A term she clearly did not understand.

All of us here at Politicalgates wish Gabby a great evening and a future full recovery and we look forward to her return to politics.

Emily's List is a political action committee whose aim is to elect and support pro-choice Democratic women into political office.

https://twitter.com/#!/emilyslist will be live tweeting the event this evening with pictures and updates.

BONUS (by Patrick):

Thanks to our reader KatieAnnieOakley, we discovered that the first episode of the new HBO-comedy "Veep" has been posted on youtube by HBO for free viewing! So even if you cannot access HBO, you can at least watch the first episode for free - and it's well worth it! Why? Because "Veep" is a very clever and hilarious parody of a female Vice-President who is not terribly bright, amongst other things. Where did they get this idea from, I wonder...? :-)

It seems that the "VP" in "Veep", brilliantly played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, is a mixture of, let's say, Nikki Haley, Sarah Palin and...well...probably several other "not so bright" female politicians.

I cannot embed the youtube clip of "Veep", but you can access the clip HERE. You need a youtube or gmail account for viewing, as you have to confirm that you are more than 18 years old. This youtube clip is only accessible from the USA - and if you live elsewhere, you need to be clever and get yourself a perfectly legal, fast and cheap VPN in order to access this clip (as well as tons of other clips from many websites which are blocked outside the USA, for example from the popular website www.hulu.com).

Watching the first episode of "Veep", I realized that the style of "Veep" is heavily influenced by one of my favourite movies of the last years, a political comedy called "In The Loop" (from 2009). This is not a great surprise, however, as they share the same director, Armando Iannucci, who also created great comedy in the past with famous UK-comedian Steve Coogan.

At some point I thought about writing a review of the terrific movie "In The Loop", but in the end never got round to it. The story of "In The Loop" plays in the UK and the USA, and the movie is an absolute "must-see" for everyone who loves political satire (cheaply available on Amazon). "In The Loop" apparently influenced "Veep" to such an extent that they even "grabbed" one of the actors (the excellent Anna Chlumsky) who had a major role as an US-administration aide in "In The Loop" and now in a quite similar role plays the Chief of Staff of the "VP" Selina Meyer (Julia Louis-Dreyfus).

A few excerpts from "In The Loop" can be found on youtube, for example HERE and HERE (but the movie really should be watched in full, as the story is very good). Here is a trailer:

Lots of laughs, good luck and good night!

Weekly Roundup, April 14-22, 2012

by Blueberry T

Saturday, April 14, 2012

I couldn’t resist including sunnyjane’s excellent post on Senator Scott Brown, from my own state, Massachusetts.  Senator Brown likes to portray himself as Everyman, driving a pickup truck and wearing a barn jacket; but he never was Everyman.  He was elected to Ted Kennedy’s seat due to a perfect storm of circumstances.  Brown tapped into the emerging faux rage and real money of the Tea Party, pulling in major donations which he used effectively to build the regular-guy image and portray Attorney General Martha Coakley negatively.  His wife is a well-known reporter for one of the Boston networks, so he had solid media connections from the get-go.  The campaign was very short, and was interrupted by the holidays; by the time (early January) that Coakley and others realized the dynamic of the race had shifted, it was too late.  So, we’re stuck with him for now.  He continues to portray himself as a moderate, but as sunnyjane points out, he votes at least 80% of the time with the arch-conservatives, but plays “maverick” just often enough to claim the moderate label among those who aren’t paying close attention.  In addition to the votes mentioned in this post, he voted for the Blunt Amendment to allow employers to dictate employees’ health care choices and supported Keystone XL.  He is very well-funded by Wall Street in his current campaign against Elizabeth Warren (although she is raising more money from individual contributors).

Dusty has Willard Rom[o]ney’s number.  As everyone with a pulse must know by now, he constantly changes his position because he doesn’t really have a moral compass or convictions other than worshipping the almighty dollar, and is constantly trying to be someone that he is not.  Mr. Etch-a-Sketch.  He used to be pro-choice and progressive, but now he’s anti-choice and severely conservative.  Later, he’ll probably pretend to be moderate.  Ironically, he is lambasted for “gaffes” that are candid moments when he actually tells the truth:  he has rich friends like NASCAR owners; is building a house with an elevator for cars; likes firing people; doesn’t worry about the very poor; his wife drives two Cadillacs; $360K isn’t very much money to him; and he and Ann are just like you and me.  I know, right?  Dusty gives Bristol Palin and a few others a piece of her mind as well; enjoy!

Tuesday, April 17, 2012

Patrick’s post reminds us of Sarah Palin’s completely implausible story of the birth of Trig.  In a nutshell: she claims that, knowing she was carrying a baby with Down Syndrome and a heart defect, and that she had 2 prior miscarriages, 4 prior births and was 44 years old, five weeks before her due date, with amniotic fluid leaking (we’re up to 7 risk factors) and experiencing contractions, rather than going to a nearby hospital to be checked out, she chose to gave a political speech, then took two four hour flights, bypassing two more hospitals with neonatal units (one where her doctor had privileges and could easily have met her), so that she could have a “delivery” at Mat-Su Regional Health Center, a hospital that does not do high-risk deliveries, not even twins.  (How much inanity can be fit in one sentence?)  Of course, minor details like when and where Trig was born, who called the doctor and what she said, whether she was really having contractions or not –  these details change depending on which version of the tale she is telling.  Was it reckless negligence or a complete fabrication?  If these were the only factors, there might be a choice – but the photos and other circumstantial evidence prove that babygate was indeed a brazen hoax.  Lidia17’s brilliant video includes key images, along with the Sarah’s own convoluted, contradictory, incredible story.

Sunnyjane’s important post highlights the right-wing’s crusade against environmentalism.  Back in the day, environmentalism was bipartisan; in fact, the first Earth Day and enactment of landmark environmental legislation (eg Clean Water Act, Clean Air Act, Endangered Species Act) occurred during Richard Nixon’s presidency.  More recently, Republicans supported ideas such as “cap and trade,” which would set limits on carbon emissions that can be traded, thus bringing market forces to bear on air pollution abatement – until President Obama was elected, that is.  Then, suddenly, “cap and trade” became dirty words for prior supporters like Sarah Palin and John McCain and many others.  Instead, there is all-out stonewalling of environmental initiatives to address air and water pollution, and a holy war against not only environmentalists, but also EPA.  The oil industry controls the Republican agenda and politicians even more blatantly than under Bush.  Now, eschewing links that had developed between Christians and environmentalists (over that pesky biblical “stewardship of the earth” thingy), right-wing Dominionists are actively demonizing the environmental movement.  The set of DVD’s really is titled, “Resisting the Green Dragon.” (I thought the title was a joke at first, but no.)  From the DVD listing:  “Why Christians should resist the environmentalist movement… it covers a variety of topics---including environmental myths, global warming, how "going green" leads to poverty, and more.”

Happy Earth Day, Politicalgaters!  Did you know that Rupert Murdoch considers wind turbines to be “ugly”?  I guess he doesn’t live within view of a coal-fired or nuclear power plant, because then he would really know “ugly.”  (Of course, as sunnyjane noted, he could just look in the mirror.)  Plus, if he lived near these plants, he would breathe “ugly” every day at coal-fired plants and run the risk of Fukushima-like radiation disaster near nuclear plants.  Personally, I think he should live in these locations near power plants, since he prefers them as power sources.  But, I guess he figures those ugly views are only for peons and “crappy bloggers.” Kathleen also had some great information about the progress Germany is making with wind power (20%!!) and about reductions in bird deaths from wind power.  In addition to the reduced rotational speed of the new-generation turbines, some research related to a wind turbine near me found that shutting off the lights that illuminate the wind turbines at night greatly reduced bird and bat mortality.  (Apparently insects were attracted by the lights, and birds and bats were attracted to the insects.  There are still red lights on the turbines themselves to signal to airplanes, but these are not a problem.)  This is an area right on the Atlantic flyway, a major bird migration route, so there was a lot of concern about bird deaths; thankfully, it is not a big problem.

Some Comments and Links:  (I am still behind so didn’t get to read all the comments; I’m sure I missed some gems!)

Older_Wiser:  No, Mittens, everyone doesn't "envy" you--they simply want to be treated fairly and your agenda doesn't qualify for fairness, either.  Do you really think your record of eliminating jobs here in the US and shipping companies overseas to qualify for tax breaks and cheap labor really resonates with sensible voters who think for themselves and are suffering, whose children are unsure if they even have a future?  How many average Americans do you think can put $100M in a sheltered trust for 5 kids and still have plenty of money to maintain the kind of lifestyle you live, much less afford to send their kids to college for 4 yrs and beyond on their own with the knowledge they will inherit a fortune?

Comeonpeople:  You know what?  I was just thinking that  the Romney's reckless treatment of their dog Seamus, all those years ago, has gotten more national scrutiny than Sarah & her doctor's treatment of Tri-G 4 years ago.  I think that really says a lot.

ProChoiceGrandma:  It always struck me as a highly unusual choice of words when Sarah used "logistics" to describe the "birth" of Trig.  But "logistics" fits right in when you are staging a faked presentation, making sure all the actors are in their place and know their lines…

Psalm023:  Lydia17 did a great job!!  In the audio, where Sarah answers the press, her voice is so overly sickening sweet, a little girl voice, speaking at low volume, like she's speaking to a child.   That is one of her manipulation techniques to deceive everyone listening.  It gets the desired result of disarming everyone, which discourages them from asking any more personal questions.  Compare that innocent-sounding voice to Sarah's normal everyday raspy loud Fox News voice.   When she's cornered it's all soft and sweet, and when she's overbearingly confident, it's harpy mode.

JCos:  No disrespect to Tri-G, but wasn't Palin's special needs gift from God meant to teach her valuable life lessons?  So why is she still a hot-headed, short tempered, ignorant, selfish, lazy, greedy bitch?

Jame:  Murdoch? Interested in things that kill birds? Since when? He is pro-pesticide, pro-herbicide, pro-chemical of every sort. THOSE are the biggest bird-killers in the world, bar none.   The only birds Murdoch is concerned about are all the 'canaries' who might be willing to 'sing to the authorities' in his phone-hacking case, in exchange for a get-out-of-jail-free card.

Cheeriogirl found this on the Rom[o]ney’sIranian oil investments, conveniently left off their 2010 tax returns.
