A Parody of Outraged Maidenhood - Review of Bristol Palin's Book "Not Afraid of Life: My Journey So Far"

The author of this review on amazon.com about Bristol Palin's book "Not Afraid of Life: My Journey So Far" has kindly given us permission to republish this review here.

***
A Parody of Outraged Maidenhood

Corinne Quayle, Tricia Nixon, Sarah Gore, the Agnew girls (Pamela, Susan, and Kimberly), Jennifer and Judith Kemp... all of them, any of them, and other Vice Presidential candidates' daughters must be limp with relief that Mummy didn't find a ghostwriter and publisher to put out a book this sleazy, and so early in a young woman's life.

Bristol Palin professes many things in her life: that her parents gave her a "purity ring" in adolescence (a sure-fire applause line for one of her mother's speeches, had she used it, which she hasn't), that she has had only one sex partner at the age of twenty ("one too many," as Nancy French writes). After being put on birth-control pill at age fifteen, she says, to relieve menstrual cramps, Bristol woke up "cold in a tent" after passing out from too many wine coolers and losing her virginity; and that the young man to whom she announced her betrothal not once but twice is "a gnat." Oh, and that she felt she had to "watch her back" in the presence of Meghan McCain. Bristol's many, many grievances--such as why her family did not routinely fly first-class when her mother was, briefly, governor of Alaska, or why the McCains owned so much Louis Vuitton luggage and had more hairdressers at hand during the 2008 campaign--take up most of this book. And from the foreword by Theodore Roosevelt, the person who actually reads this book has to wonder how much of it Bristol herself read. It also appears to be a catch-all for grievances accumulated by her mother since the publication of Sarah Palin's ghost-written "Going Rogue."

"'Wow!' said my mom," pointing out that the "Dancing With the Stars" finals garnered more viewers than Keith Olbermann, whom Bristol says, "has seemed to disappear, and is more irrelevant than ever." Umm, Keith Olbermann returned to the airwaves this week--poor timing, girl.

The knife-sticking and twisting goes beyond Olbermann, President Obama and the McCain and Johnston families, including Bristol's fellow contestants on DWTS, a competition entered by no other politician's daughter. Bristol/Nancy call the human-interest pieces on Kyle Massey, Jennifer Grey, and Florence Henderson "sleekly produced tearjerkers," a phrase difficult to imagine emanating from Bristol's lips, given her trash-talking posts on MySpace and Facebook. Yet she tells her professional dance partner Mark Ballas that their chances are "all in God's hands." Really? After the instructions given on the Internet to Palin fans about how to game the system and multiple-vote for her?

The real victim of this otherwise forgettable book is little Tripp Easton Mitchell Johnston. Children are cruel, as his own mother has demonstrated in 253 pages. Tripp will be the target of playground gibes before he can read.

The real culprit for foisting this tawdry family on the American scene is John McCain. Without him, we never would have heard of Bristol Palin.

Bristol Palin tells her story of innocence - Bristol in 2007: "Track told my parents that I am a stoner", "Mother thinks I am pregnant", "I am a slut"

By Patrick

Bristol Palin decided that the world needed to learn about the innocent victim Bristol Palin, and so she wrote about it (or her ghost did.) It's even worse when you hear it in Bristol's very own voice. The world wonders if the Palins can get any lower. I bet they can, but right now, they would appear to have hit rock bottom.

Bristol's colourful life and connections have been researched for a long time - especially by those people who are interested in Sarah Palin's pregnancy with Trig. For example, the research team which once supported the blog Palindeception, and several of its members who later went on to support Palingates and now Politicalgates, took a very close look. In late 2008 and early 2009, two members of this team examined myspace pages which had connections to Bristol's circle of friends. It was a painstaking task, but they were very successful and not only collected a lot of information about life in Wasilla, but also discovered myspace comments by Bristol Palin herself, written in 2007.

Although back then we even managed to get a website like Gawker interested , those myspace comments never received a lot of attention. Hopefully this will now change, as the world which "Bristol the victim" now describes in her book appears to be very different from the world we got to know through myspace, as well as through other personal sources in Alaska. I myself was in contact with sources in Alaska in 2009 who had a lot to say about Bristol's eventful love life and other "habits" of hers. However, let's allow Bristol to speak for herself, in her comments on myspace from 2007, uncensored and unfiltered.

+++ In April 2009, I compiled a summary of Bristol Palin's myspace-comments in a PDF-document, which can be downloaded here, together with myspace-comments of her friends - this is a must-read in order to understand the issues I am talking about in this post! +++

In the comments, Bristol Palin for example openly flirts for months with Johnny C., who was known to be quite a heartbreaker in those days, describes how Track told her parents that she was a "stoner", and most importantly, describes how Sarah overheard a phone conversation with Johnny C. and at the time thought that Bristol was pregnant. As a result of this conversation, Sarah Palin then took Bristol's phone away for a few days (incredibly effective parenting, surely). So what did Bristol say that made Sarah Palin think that Bristol was pregnant? We don't know for sure. But in my opinion it's safe to assume that it was quite explicit. Which also would make Sarah Palin's claim on Barbara Walters in 2009 that Sarah didn't know that Bristol was sexually active a big fat lie:

These are the most important comments by Bristol (click to enlarge):

In order to make Bristol's myspace comments from 2007 even more accessible, I created a video clip with the comments, also good for sharing (click on 1080HD to watch in High Definition and in lower-right corner to watch full-screen):

These myspace comments are not the only pieces of documention which show that Bristol's description of events in her upcoming book do not sound quite right. The fact is, if Levi really took advantage of Bristol and basically raped her when she was fifteen years old (which I do not believe for one second), if he is such a creep, as she insinuates in her book, why did she get engaged to him afterwards, and even famously got back together and became engaged for a second time to Levi in 2010?

We receive more insights into what happened back then in 2010 from an unlikely source - from the former C4P commenter Toki De La Vega. At some point in the past, Sarah Palin's (ex-)confidante Rebecca Mansour ("RAM") felt an insatiable urge in 2010 to write Toki De La Vega masses of private twitter messages with highly confidential information about the Palins - despite that fact that RAM, as she admitted in the messages, had never met Toki.

In those days, Toki De La Vega was still a faithful Palinbot, but times have radically changed, because in the meantime Toki has became an outspoken critic of Sarah and Bristol and their fanatic fans. He has made RAM's private messages available to the Daily Caller. The Daily Caller only published a selection of RAM's messages and apparently omitted the most interesting ones. Yesterday Toki released the first unpublished private messages by RAM on his blog (which is appropriately named "This Looks Like Trouble").

In a new post he included several of RAM's messages in a collage - watch:

For Toki's merciless take on the latest news about Bristol, read his post "2012 Campaign Slogan: I Lost My Virginity While Drunk."

Some of Rebecca Mansour's messages are revealing, for example the information that "Bristol & Levi are not welcome in the Palin home, only Trip is":

RAM doesn't see the irony (family values, anyone...?) and also provides another glimpse into Sarah's perceived mindset when she says that "We're trying to get her to push the wedding date back as far as possible because we know he'll fuck up & we'd have them break up now then have to divorce later. It would be best if she could meet someone else. Know anyone upstanding? I'm serious?"

RAM's summary about Bristol is pretty damning:

"Lonely and dumb."

I know it sounds quite harsh, but I think that sums it up rather well, even if RAM couldn't foresee the latest developments. I never thought I would like a quote by Rebecca Mansour. Strange times indeed!

AK Republican Jay Ramras Says That Sarah Palin's "Bird Nose Comment" is "Mean and Vindictive". Sarah's Trademark Granted & Bristol Calls Levi a "Gnat"

By Kathleen & Patrick

Alaska Republican Jay Ramras responded to the comment made by Sarah Palin in an email exchange dated October 21, 2008 that described him as having a "bird nose" and in which Palin stated: "Maybe Jay's missing his little lady and feels frustrated lately. I'll have to keep him away from Bristol."

Politicalgates first reported this email exchange and other shocking remarks that Palin made regarding Ramras which suggested that he may be a child molester on June 13, 2011.

David Corn at Mother Jones referenced the Politicalgates post when he wrote an article summarizing the main issues arising from the 24,000 pages of emails released by the State of Alaska and called Sarah Palin's remarks about Jay Ramras "arguably anti -Semitic." David Corn also tweeted our post on June 13, 2011. In addition, the progressive "America Blog" as well as "Political Carnival" also picked up this story.

Politicalgates reported on June 13, 2011:

Rep. Ramras' remarks triggered a remarkable email exchange between Sarah Palin and her closest staff members which exemplifies Palin's reactions when she is confronted with criticism and open defiance.

Sarah Palin was livid. At the same time, she had no hesitation to insinuate to her staff that Ramras couldn't be trusted, as far as sexuality is concerned. On October 21, 2007, she wrote at 14:31:

From: Palin, Sarah (GOV sponsored)

To: Frye, Ivy J (DOA); Galvin, Patrick S (DOR)

Cc: 'fek9wnr@yahoo.com'

Sent: Sun Oct 21 14:31:08 2007

Subject: Re: Ramras

I heard it.

Sheeesh... He's basically just announced I'm not around HIM enough! Doesn't he know why? I have two teenaged daughters, everyone knows gotta' keep the young 'uns away from the likes of Jay.

(...)

Sarah Palin's reply to Ivy Frye couldn't possibly be any worse:

From: Palin, Sarah (GOV sponsored)

To: Frye, Ivy J (DOA)

Sent: Sun Oct 21 14:36:58 2007

Subject: Re: Ramras

Oh yeah- and I jsu read your letter online @ Frontiersman!!!! I'm cheering. Todd's cheering.

I'll be in Juneau tonight. But not to hold Jay Bird-Nose Ramras' hand. What a doof.

Rep. Jay Ramras is Jewish, which is a very well-known fact in political circles in Alaska. A more inappropriate comment than this one about "Bird-Nose" Jay Ramras is hardly conceivable. It's not the email conversations of a teenager we are reading here, but the remarks of Sarah Palin, who is rumored to aspire to become the most powerful person in the world.

These are by far not the only nasty remark which Sarah Palin makes about Jay Ramras in the published emails. In an email exchange from June 7, 2008 she calls Jay Ramras "Vajayjay":

From: gov.sarah@yahoo.com
Sent: Saturday, June 07, 2008 7:10 PM
To: Balash; Joseph R (GOV); Galvin; Patrick S (DOR); Irwin; Tom E (DNR)
Cc: Rutherford; Marty K (DNR); Goode; Kelly C (GOV); Leighow; Sharon W (GOV)

Subject: Re: Anchorage

Vajayjay's surely not impressing his constituents, eh? Is that the best Fairbanks can do?

Furthermore, in an exchange from October 5, 2007 Sarah Palin makes another particular insensitive remark about Rep. Ramras when she writes to Ivy Frye:

Maybe Jay's missing his little lady and feels frustrated lately. I'll have to keep him away from Bristol.

Apparently nothing is too low for Sarah Palin.

The blog JTA ("The Global News Service of the Jewish people") received a statement from Rep. Ramras, and Ramras doesn't hold back:

Former Alaska Rep. Jay Ramras, who is Jewish, said there was a "meanness and a vindictiveness" in the way Palin used his physical appearance to describe him.

"She governs like one of the mean girls of the seventh grade," Ramras, a Republican, told JTA.

He said Palin became "more and more of an enigma to people living in Alaska when we watched her govern."

"I'm glad she's wearing a Star of David that she got in Israel," Ramras said. "I hope she continues to grow as a person."

We also hope that Sarah Palin continues to grow as a person.......

In other news: It appears that Sarah and Bristol Palin will receive their trademarks!

Politico reports:

According to U.S. News & World Report, the women’s applications to trademark their names and images “have cleared a major hurdle and should soon be approved for the potential presidential candidate and her ‘Dancing With the Stars’ child."

The website reported that Friday was the last day to challenge Sarah Palin’s trademark bid. Bristol’s challenge deadline was June 10 and passed without a peep. The women should be trademarked in less than three months.

US News asserts that Sarah Palin's application specifically refers to the use of her name, image and signature in the political arena. In particular the areas of "business and advertising purposes, political elections, entertainment services and for providing motivational speaking services in the field of politics" will now be covered by the Palin trademark.

Sarah Palin now has control of the use of her name, signature and image for such things as merchandising products using her name or image on tee shirts, baseball caps and the usual types of memorabilia that one might find on a campaign trail or at a political rally for instance. Palin will have total control of such products.

Small businesses beware, no one will be allowed to make a profit on the Sarah Palin brand
without Palin ensuring her fair share.

Palin's trademark will also protect Sarah Palin's online presence. The trademark of her online name will prove invaluable for mass fundraising and stating Palin's political positions, especially if she mounts a campaign for the Presidency as SarahPac would not be allowed to continue. Her supporters would need to find her online quickly and without confusion. Trademarking her name should take care of that.

Finally, Bristol Palin has declared that she was on the pill, lost her virginity after a night on the booze and that Levi is a "gnat." Bristol also claims that Levi had confessed that he had "gotten another woman pregnant." A claim that I for one am not convinced of. I also doubt that we can learn much from a twenty year old who relates a story of "deception and disappointment" and seems to have no problem in placing all the blame on the shoulders of a young man who the Palin family had no hesitation in using for their own political purposes. Not Afraid of Life: My Journey so Far is due to be published by William Morrow next week.

Levi Johnston's book, Deer in the Headlights: My Life in Sarah Palin's Crosshairs, is due to be released on September 27, 2011 by Touchstone Books. I have ordered my copy.
