The overlooked, but very valuable book about Sarah Palin: "Unlikely Liberal" by former Alaskan journalist Matthew Zencey

By Patrick

First of all, let me apologize for not having put up a post during the last two weeks. We should have put up an open post, but I am not the biggest fan of open posts and always thought that I will write a new post very soon. However, due to "restraints" of real life, I didn't come round to do it in the end. Maybe it was also a case of "writer's block", I don't know.

While we entertain and educate ourselves by discussing a lot of diverse topics in the comments, I thought it would a be good idea to revisit our favorite subject, Sarah Palin - the woman who left Alaska to seek fame and fortune and who was lucky enough to find a group of hardcore fans who are themselves so detached from reality that they believe every word she says and apparently also believe that she is the new messiah. It is just too interesting to witness the demise of this woman whose tweets and facebook post used to keep the mainstream media busy for days, over and over again. It now seems like light-years ago, but of course that only happened "yesterday." Today, however, only a handful of usually minor internet outfits continue to care about what she does or says. Let's just say that the stock of "Palin Inc." is not exactly rising.

So why continue to write about her? Well, first of all, Sarah Palin loves to connect herself with other right-wingers who might be far more dangerous than she ever was (dangerous at some fleeting moment in the past, that is). In 2012 she pretended to support the old scoundrel and adulterer Newt Gingrich and his martian wife, and now she is in love with Ted Cruz and Rand Paul. The good thing about all this is that one can be sure that anyone who Sarah picks or supports is either a rabble-rouser, liar, demagogue, extremist, adulterer, or all together. She has a real talent for picking the worst.

Regarding Rand Paul, let me add that I am absolutely disgusted about his very own and special brand of "libertarianism." He simply turns it into an ideology which wants to give all power to corporations, and demonizes anything positive a government could do, because this apparently would be "tyranny". Ever since I listened to an interview a long time ago, in which Rand's father Ron Paul said that the existing system of universal healthcare in the United Kingdom is "tyranny", I was thoroughly disgusted by those people who basically promote what could be called a system of "corporate anarchy." No rules, no protection, because don't you know, we want our "liberty." Unfortunately I can't find this interview with Ron Paul right now, but I clearly remember him saying that about healthcare in the United Kingdom.

In addition, it's worth to continue to write about Sarah Palin simply because there is still so much to discover and to discuss. For the example the "official record" of her time as Governor of Alaska. Her fanatic fans still love to spam the blogs with lists of her glorious "accomplishments", but it's actually not easy to come across a fairly objective account about what really happened back then when Sarah was Governor and when Alaska still was the land of wine and honey, as her rabid fans apparently believe.

But in fact, such a detailed account exists, and it is the overlooked book "Unlikely Liberal" by former Alaskan journalist Matthew Zencey, who covered Alaskan politics for twenty years, for example as the editorial page editor of the Anchorage Daily News and who also knew Sarah Palin very well.

The book's apparent lack of success in my view was probably caused by two main reasons: First of all, the book came far too late, which was unfortunate for the author. It was only published in September 2012, when the broader public simply wasn't interested any more in Sarah Palin's legacy as Governor of Alaska. Secondly, the choice of title for this book simply is awful. While it undoubtedly is one of the main premises of the book that Sarah Palin followed certain "liberal policies" while being the Governor of Alaska, the title of the book really should have reflected the fact that the author actually attempted to write an honest in-depth account of Sarah Palin's political actions while she was Governor. I just think that the title was a bad choice.

Matthew Zencey succeeds: The author soberly presents the facts, trying to be as objective as possible. The book is easy to read, well-written, nicely organized in smaller, precise chapters and contains a huge amount of facts. It is more than obvious that factual accuracy was of the utmost importance for the author. There are many fascinating facts to discover, even for "experts." The book clearly has no serious competitor in the ranks of the dozens of books which have been written about Palin, as no other book focuses on Sarah Palin's record as Governor in such detail. If the book had been published for example in early 2011, it probably would have been quite a big success, as far as sales are concerned.

As an example, let's mention the reasons for Sarah Palin's resignation. Sarah's fans spend much of their time screaming on the blogs that the evil liberals wanted to "bankrupt" Sarah and that she had no other choice than to resign. At Politicalgates, we also wrote about the fact that this claim has long been debunked. Matthew Zencey offers some addition insights and writes:

So why did Sarah Palin resign?

Was it because she spent so much time and personal money fighting ethics charges? Did being in the spotlight bring too much harsh scrutiny of her kids? Was it the chance to make real money, not her piddling $ 125,000-a-year salary as governor? Was it because she had accomplished the big things she'd set out to do? Was it her fading popularity? Her loss of political support in the legislature? The prospect of being stuck doing the boring work of passing a budget and other routine matters of state governance? Was it so she could have more time to burnish her national image? Did she think that being in office forced her to be "politically correct"? Was being the mom of a special needs kid too much while maintaining a full-time job far from her home? Did she simply hate the job?

In my humble opinion, the answer is all of the above.

Palin gave many of the above answers in public, and some of them in private. Here's what she told her Going Rogue writer, Lynn Vincent:

Created: 7/11/2009 7:36:23 AM
Subject: Re: Important dot-connecting

(By leaving I'm) "sending the message that 1) I'm not a professional politician; 2) I've accomplished the goals as Governor that I promised; ethics reform; mandated new clear and equitable share of Alaska's resource development for Alaskans; built vehicle to get gasline built; slowed the rate of growth of govt; eliminated personal luxuries the state used to fund for governors so we could set the example ... So handling the reins to Sean is just sensible and fair and efficient instead of suffering Alaskans through a lame duck session!" (Her emphasis.)

(...)

As is often the case with Palin, her complaints included exaggerations and problems of her own making. Instead of commuting from Wasilla, she could have chosen to spend her term living in state-paid housing - the governor's mansion in Juneau - just a couple of blocks from her office in the state capital. (Regaring her claim that she "can't afford to have security at my home"): She actually reduced her state trooper security detail, as documented in the Troopergate investigation. She could have had state-paid security at her home if needed - but it would have undercut her populist image as an ordinary Alaskan forgoing perks, accessible to the people.

The vast majority of Palin's legal fees were to defend herself in Troopergate, after she filed a formal ethics complaint against herself. It's unclear why she needed to pay her lawyer hundreds of dollars an hour, for example, to attack an ethics complaint filed under the pseudonym of a British TV character.

Palin complained that media scrutiny of her kids was grwoing intolerable, even though her status as a mother - a family-values hockey mom with a special needs kid - was an integral part of her political "brand", and she routinely displayed her children at political events.

Unfortunately, Matthew Zencey, as far as I could see, doesn't mention the additional detail we reported in February 2012, another fact which renders the usual claim that Sarah Palin was on the way to go "bankrupt" even more ludicrous:

+++

It it simply untrue that Sarah Palin was forced to pay the costs for her legal defense against the ethics complaints herself, was forced to "bankrupt her family" and was subsequently driven out of office, as Palin herself claims in an email from January 2, 2009. This often repeated myth can easily be debunked with hard evidence.

When Sarah Palin's first legal defense fund, the "Alaska Fund Trust", was declared unethical by the state-assigned investigator Tim Petumenos in June 2010 after an ethics complaint by Kim Chatman, Petumenos published an extensive report, and for the first time the following was revealed in public: The State of Alaska offered to pay for the defense against the ethics complaints, and even entered into a contract for legal services with Palin's lawyers, for an amount "up to $ 100,000 at public expense." This would have given Sarah Palin enough resources to mount a solid defense, but as investigator Petumenos notes: "No invoices were submitted."

The reasons for this untypical behaviour by Sarah Palin are completely unclear. The lawyers claim that it would have been "too difficult to separate the functions of representing Governor Palin in her official capacity in the pending state-related matters, and representing her in other related campaign or partisan matters beyond the scope of the state contract." This explanation is nonsensical, as every lawyer knows who has ever invoiced billable hours.

Screenshot from the Petumenos report:

Sarah Palin instead choose to set up her unethical "Alaska Fund Trust."

The meme that Sarah Palin was forced to bankrupt herself is therefore pure propaganda.

+++

Back to the current post:

Therefore Sarah Palin not only had by far the biggest expenses through filing an ethics complaint against herself as a tactical political move after the bipartisan Branchflower investigation concluded that she had abused her powers, but she also rejected a huge sum of money which was offered to her to defend herself against ethics complaints. This reminds us of the old Palin rule: Her version of reality has to be correct, because the rest of the world is always lying (and always hates her).

It is therefore only consequential that in her private emails and her resignation speech the subject of "bankruptcy" found little or no mention.

Well, there are many other interesting parts of this book which are worth quoting, but let's stop here. Matthew Zencey delivered a convincing and very valuable book, which unfortunately did not get the attention it deserved. But as I said, it simply came too late.

There seems to be virtually no serious person left in America who could imagine a political future for Sarah Palin. Even Bill Kristol is fed up with her.

But Sarah Palin still tries to influence the political discourse, and therefore her own record should not be forgotten. She was not the "hottest Governor", but certainly the "weirdest Governor."

Finally, you might ask whether Matthew Zencey mentions some of Sarah Palin's "private scandals", for example babygate, the desperately suppressed fact that Sarah Palin faked her pregnancy with Trig (which virtually half of Alaska knows about).

The answer is: No, these "private" matters are not being discussed in the book. However, Matthew Zencey preferred an "honest" solution for this "problem", for which I give him credit. He writes in the preface of the book:

You'll have to look elsewhere if you care about Bristol's pregnancy, the feud with Levi, Trig's birth, the state of Palin's marriage to Todd, her career in high school basketball, Piper's progress in school, and other parts of Palin's personal life. In my view, a politician's personal life is a public issue only if it reveals hypocrisy on a political question or significantly compromises his or her ability to do the job.

Of course disagree with the second sentence, because the faked pregnancy definitely does question Sarah Palin's ability to do the job, but I also think it was a very good idea by Matthew Zencey to address those topics directly in this manner right at the beginning of the book.

(For us "insiders", the following sentence in the "acknowledgements" of the book is also pretty interesting: "I appreciate Elizabeth Demer's willingness to recommend publishing my work and her guidance on the manuscript.")

In conclusion, I can highly recommend Mathew Zencey's book. Together with "The Rogue" by Joe McGinniss, "The Lies of Sarah Palin" by Geoffrey Dunn and "Blind Allegiance to Sarah Palin" by Frank Bailey, it provides invaluable insights and facts. Also, concerning the topic of "Alaska, the oil and Sarah Palin" (as well as other topics), there is also the very detailed book "Crude Awakening: Money, Mavericks, and Mayhem in Alaska" by Tony Hopfinger and Amanda Coyne, which we have read and can also recommend.

Sarah Palin may fade from the spotlight, but a look at her botched legacy is always a good idea, especially now where she openly pals around with politicians like Ted Cruz and Rand Paul. Hopefully they have heard about the famous Palin-curse...

Sarah Palin At Las Vegas Right On Line Conference Cheers On Americans for Prosperity and Encourages Bloggers to "Keep on Telling the Truth" - UPDATE: HuffPost-blogger Geoffrey Dunn reports new details about Sarah Palin's scandalous "Trans Canada" crony capitalism

By Kathleen

Last night in Las Vegas Sarah Palin addressed on-line bloggers and activists from Koch Brothers backed Americans For Prosperity during the RightOnLine conference at the Sheldon Adelson owned Venetian hotel.

The speech included the usual Palin hyperbolic rant against President Obama. She sneeringly said that he leaned towards Marxist policies and was a socialist at heart who snorted cocaine, smoked pot and ate fido. All the typical Palin fare dished out with buzz words and no substance. Yadda yadda. I would worry about her influence if her deliberate exaggerations were not so worn out and banal. She needs to get herself a new scriptwriter because the present one isn't creating that starburst quality that's required of a GOP leader. Rather she comes off as all perky pep but there is no vigour to her words. An actress, as they say, is only as good as her script and this one isn't going anywhere.

Instead in her rush to endear herself to her audience Palin let something slip. Rule number one in the Palin book of giving speeches is to be sure to flatter the audience and tell it what it wants to hear. Palin reassured the bloggers and activists from organisations such as Americans For Prosperity that "New Media (bloggers) goes beyond just merely organising. It's more fundamental than that. New Media has become a force for activism and for information. You fill a vital role because you do what too many in the old media won't do, can't do and that's tell the truth." Isn't she precious? Bloggers tell the truth.

We bloggers certainly do tell the truth Sarah, even the somewhat inconvenient truths that you would rather stayed on a shelf collecting dust. Truths that you call untruths and assign to the "old media" such as "It still is a great mystery who really is Trig Paxon Van Palin's real mother" when you know full well that the "old media" will no longer touch that question with a ten metre barge pole. The reality, Sarah, is that you and your staff went to great lengths to shut up the media in Alaska when it tried to address that very question.

In true hypocritical fashion Sarah only supports the telling of certain so called truths such as who snorted cocaine as a young college undergraduate and who tasted dog meat as a child. All information that President Obama set out himself in his autobiography, Dreams From My Father.

And that is the difference between the hypocrite and the revealer. One goes out of her way to cover up the truth and the other has no problem in telling it for what it is. It's time that Sarah Palin got herself acquainted with what the truth is. Meantime, I won't hold my breath.

UPDATE (by Patrick):

Sarah Palin wants the bloggers to write the truth, and in fact several bloggers have in the past done just this. And they still do write the very inconvenient truth about Sarah Palin and her personal and political scandals. Just yesterday evening, our friend and outstanding Huffington Post-blogger Geoffrey Dunn posted a new investigative article about an issue which also has been ignored by the media: Sarah Palin's acts of "crony capitalism" as a Governor when it came to giving $500 million as state subsidies to Trans Canada for, well, for what exactly? CBS had the answer in September 2008: "To offset initial costs of obtaining regulatory approvals" for one of Sarah Palin's biggest propaganda projects, the planned "construction of a 1,715-mile, $40 billion gas pipeline from Prudhoe Bay to a distribution hub in western Canada".

That money will be paid to Trans Canada (looking at press reports, it is unclear to me how much of it has already been given to Trans Canada), but it remains more than doubtful that this construction project will ever start. That is also a lot of money for "obtaining regulatory approvals." I guess Trans Canada could not have been too unhappy about these kind of regulations.

Geoffrey Dunn examines in his article at Huffington Post how Sarah Palin and her team pushed for giving the $500 million to Trans Canada, despite the fact the Governor Palin was advised to remain impartial. Hard proof for this allegation can be found in Sarah Palin's published emails, the ones in which there was apparently "nothing to see here", according to the lazy and uninformed US mainstream media.

Geoffrey Dunn writes:

AGIA provided Palin with the authority to issue a state license for the construction of a 1,715-mile, $40 billion gas pipeline from Prudhoe Bay to a distribution hub in western Canada, replete with a fat $500 million subsidy from the State of Alaska. Talk about fiscal steroids.

In fact, Palin and her administration slanted the selection process for building the pipeline so that only one company -- TransCanada Corp. -- had their bid accepted on the project. Four others were deemed "noncompliant."

TransCanada had direct ties to her administration. The head of Palin's so-called Pipeline Team -- Marty Rutherford -- had previously served as a lobbyist for Foothills Pipe Line Alaska, Inc., a subsidiary of TransCanada. Rutherford's former partner at her Jade North lobbying firm, Patricia Bielawski, served as TransCanada's lead lobbyist in securing the deal. A former TransCanada executive, Patrick Anderson, also served as an outside consultant for the Palin pipeline team.

Moreover, according to an investigation conducted by the Associated Press in October of 2008, "Despite promises and legal guidance not to talk directly with potential bidders, Palin had meetings or phone calls with nearly every major candidate, including TransCanada."

When a large batch of Palin emails was released last year, the mainstream media essentially gave Palin a free pass on their content. It was a case of journalistic malfeasance. Not only were significant portions of the Palin email cache shamefully withheld or redacted, reporters unfamiliar with the details and nuances of Palin's career didn't understand the complex references and political contexts of many of her communications.

One of my favorite Palin email threads involves Palin's courting of TransCanada in June of 2008, less than three months before she signed an agreement with the Canadian company. The thread reveals Palin trying to assemble a group numbering nearly two-dozen of her advisors, legislators and TransCanada officials for an under-the-radar feast featuring a prized Alaskan salmon.

While some of the thread was redacted over claims of "privileged" or "personal" content, the communications nonetheless reveal Palin's particular brand of cronyism vis-a-vis TransCanada.

It is worth revisiting the excellent investigative AP-article about the pipeline project ("Bidding For Palin Pipeline Contract Flawed") which Geoffrey Dunn mentions in his post. This AP article is actually one of the very few hard-hitting investigative pieces on Sarah Palin that the mainstream media has ever published.

The Associated Press wrote in June 2010:

Beginning at the Republican National Convention in August, the McCain-Palin ticket has touted the pipeline as an example of how it would help America achieve energy independence.

Despite Palin's boast of a smart and fair bidding process, the AP found that her team crafted terms that favored only a few independent pipeline companies and ultimately benefited the winner, TransCanada Corp.

And contrary to the ballyhoo, there's no guarantee the pipeline will ever be built; at a minimum, any project is years away, as TransCanada must first overcome major financial and regulatory hurdles.

In interviews and a review of records, the AP found:

Instead of creating a process that would attract many potential builders, Palin slanted the terms away from an important group - the global energy giants that own the rights to the gas.

Despite promises and legal guidance not to talk directly with potential bidders, Palin had meetings or phone calls with nearly every major candidate, including TransCanada.

The leader of Palin's pipeline team had been a partner at a lobbying firm where she worked on behalf of a TransCanada subsidiary. Also, that woman's former business partner at the lobbying firm was TransCanada's lead private lobbyist on the pipeline deal. Plus, a former TransCanada executive served as an outside consultant to Palin's pipeline team.

So bloggers still write and have been writing the truth about Sarah Palin - and have continued to be very often ignored by the mainstream media, which has developed a distinct "touchy touchy" approach over the years as far as many of the "inconvenient" details about Sarah Palin are concerned. The quoted AP-article above is actually a very rare exception. Bloggers can have a great impact, as they are able to report the truth without corporate restraints, and the internet is their friend.

Geoffrey Dunn is also the author of the equally outstanding Palin-biography "The Lies of Sarah Palin: The Untold Story Behind Her Relentless Quest for Power."

UPDATE 2:

Barb Dwyer, our longtime reader, commentator and friend from Alaska left two very insightful comments regarding AGIA and the "All Alaskan Gasline", which are incredibly informative for readers outside Alaska.

Comment 1:

The discussion to build the all Alaska gasline did not just start this year, it has been legislated since 1974 and approved TWICE by the voters with the last bill being in '02. There are no "problems" with doing this, other than the big oil companies desperately DON'T want it built until the technology exists so they can pump the gas up over the polar ice cap into Asia, taking everything and giving Alaska nothing. People need to wake the fuck up about this.

It will NOT be expensive, since Mitsubishi Heavy Industries has promised the funds to build it and buyers have been lined up waiting to purchase the excess LNG since '04, The "guarantees on pricing" means you bought the whole "open season" fiasco Parnell came up with (but still refuses to show the results of) hook, line and sinker which was nothing but another huge smokescreen put out by the oil companies. Alaska owns the gas and the leases at Pt. Thompson, there's not a damn thing the oil companies can do about that other than stop the gasline being built altogether, which they have now managed to do for over 30 YEARS!

What, pray tell, "TransCanada" line is there to interfere with? It will never EVER be built and it is impossible to interfere with something that will never exist. These are the oil company talking points, that no matter how absurd (remember the Denali line which was nothing but a bullshit ploy that Conoco pumped millions of dollars into to keep everyone confused) people of Alaska seem to buy into and repeat over and over, when there isn't a shred of truth to any of it.

The all alaska gasline is the largest "shovel ready" infrastructure project in the world. The permits have existed since 1974 to bring it right next to the pipeline and that causeway is cleared all the way down to Valdez where the EPA permits and cleared land exist for the terminal which has sat vacant since 1974. It was supposed to have been built within 5 years of the pipeline and the oil companies have been fighting against it ever since then. Since they DON'T own the rights to the natural gas they can't make huge profits off of it by sending it to Alaskans, which is why they want to go over the polar ice cap and keep it ALL for themselves. All they need to do is keep blowing smoke up Alaskans ass for another 20 years and Alaska will get absolutely nothing and the oil companies will have a free export they can send to Asia making pure profit on all of it.

Last but not least, let's not forget that Palin running around the state promising to build the All Alaska Gasline is what got her Wally Hickels endorsement, the Port Authority endorsement and won her the election. If she had done what she said she was going to do, Fairbanks would already be online and the spur to Kenai would be completed. Instead we are out 500 million with a treble damages clause that puts the state on the line for 1.5 billion for a gasline that was never ever going to be built. It was nothing but another big ruse and a get rich quick scheme for all those involved.

Comment 2:
Yes. We found out about the 500 million AND the fact she put us back in bed with Exxon all at the same time. People were shocked when she announced AGIA in the first place! Remember her administration then had to do major damage control and backtrack because of the huge outcry and say they were going to look at all the proposals again and take comments online at the state website. The comments left were 99% Incredulous that this kind of BS was going on again and the other 1% were tribal leaders in Canada telling them there was no way in hell any gasline was going to go through their land.

People forget that this is what caused Gov. Murkowski's downfall thus opening the door for Palin as well. He was TOLD by the voters in '02 to build the all alaska gasline that has been in place since '74. He thumbed his nose at the voters, climbed back in bed with big oil and sealed his own fate. Palin then went in and did exactly the same thing except in a much sneakier (and more devastating) way.

The crowning moment had to be when Galvin was asked if Alaskan workers would be granted work permits in Canada, since most of the line was going to be in Canada, and his response was that he had no idea if Alaskans would be allowed to work in Canada because it had never been discussed.

Barb Dwyer today also sent me the following information via email, together with some fascinating pictures:
"I thought you might like to see some literature with the truth about the gasline. This was just recently released and produced by the agency that the state set up to actually build the gasline under the bill that was approved by the voters in '02. Even though 3 Governors now have slipped around abiding by that bill, the agency it set up to actually build the all Alaska gasline still exists and works everyday to fulfill that initial task."

Let's take a look at the pictures:

It's "time for America to compete in the global energy game?"

The project is "shovel-ready?"

Well, I guess then they could start digging tomorrow, right...?

Barb Dwyer also sent me a copy of the 2002 Gasline Bill - it can be downloaded HERE.

Hopefully we will be able to publish at some point more about the "All-American LNG Project" and the scandalous details surrounding its permanent non-completion.

+++

UPDATE 3:

Barb Dwyer sent me the following additional comment:
Thanks Patrick. It should also be noted that this line the literature (the pictures above) is about (the one approved by the voters) was one of the proposals her team called "incomplete" not just once but twice after backtracking the first time. The one with all the permits already approved or intact for some time, the route established and the only one with the ability to actually obtain any of the gas (thanks to the bill), plus it was written essentially by the state agency that was created and tasked in '02 specifically to secure everything needed to build this line immediately. THAT was considered incomplete but TransCanada with no permits, no established route, no hope for ever getting some Canadian permits and most importantly NO  rights to the gas was the winner and given a 500 million dollar signing bonus.

What Steve Schmidt Told Author Geoffrey Dunn - The Movie "Game Change" is "Steve Schmidt's Confession" - UPDATE: Sarah Palin defends Rush Limbaugh + BONUS: Interviews with Steve Schmidt and Nicolle Wallace

By Kathleen

Cover Picture kindly used with permission from Geoffrey Dunn

Geoffrey Dunn is on a roll. Another of his articles about Sarah Palin has been published at Huffington Post and I understand that several more are in the works. Geoffrey has seen an advance screening of the film Game Change and reveals that the film is more about Steve Schmidt's transformation than the "hyperbole being focused on Palin."

Geoffrey's article reveals that Steve Schmidt thinks that Sarah Palin had a "destructive impact" on American politics. Schmidt further acknowledges that he was one of those responsible for unleashing an "unprepared, know-nothing whose nomination trivialized American politics." Harsh words indeed.

Geoffrey writes that Game Change is "Schmidt's confession" and asks the question that all Americans should be asking themselves "how can the United States best select its leaders when celebrity packs more electoral cache than experience or political courage?"  Will the GOP strategists learn the tough lessons that Steve Schmidt did? The jury is out on that one.

Award-winning writer and filmmaker Geoffrey Dunn's best-selling The Lies of Sarah Palin: The Untold Story Behind Her Relentless Quest for Power was published by Macmllan/St. Martin's in May of 2011 and will be published in paperback this May.

UPDATE by Patrick:

Sarah Palin again made headlines today, with a rather passionate defense of Rush Limbaugh. She said to a CNN-reporter who "surprised" GOP-starlet Sarah Palin today in Wasilla:

“I think the definition of hypocrisy is for Rush Limbaugh to have been called out, forced to apologize and retract what it is that he said in exercising his First Amendment rights and never is that the same applied to the leftist radicals who say such horrible things about the handicapped, about women, about the defenseless. “So I think that’s the definition of hypocrisy, and that’s my two cents for you.”

This is such a brilliant example of Sarah Palin's ignorance and her ever-present willingness to distort facts in order to create sympathy for her friends and in order to smear her enemies, that I decided to create a little clip with this quote. The clip shows the part of the interview in which she defends Rush Limbaugh - and then shows Limbaugh "exercising his First Amendment rights."

I believe that Sarah Palin, America's most famous mean girl, rather enjoyed Rush Limbaugh's performance. I think I could hear a few giggles. After all, this is the woman who giggled when an Alaskan "shock jock" called cancer survivor and Palin's arch-enemy Lyda Green a "bitch" and a "cancer" and who got a kick out of calling Alaskan Rep. Jay Ramras (another one of her Republican arch-enemies) "Vajajay" and "Bird-Nose" in her email messages.

I suggested to Kathleen earlier today to publish a post with the CNN video, but she replied that she was not in the mood right now for, I quote, "Palin crap." Luckily, Geoffrey's brilliant article later changed her mind - and got her in the mood to write about our most (or least) favourite subject. ;-)

Watch Sarah defense of Rush Limbaugh and then him "exercising his First Amendment rights":

In the same interview, Sarah Palin said that "anything is possible" if her name is called in a brokered GOP convention. Wonkette posts the full clip of the CNN-interview and observes:

Sarah Palin went on — or should we say, was transmitted through someone’s phone-toy in the direction of — CNN during Tuesday’s Super Snoozeday parade, and proclaimed that who knows whether she’ll run for president today, tomorrow, or after the Mayan apocalypse, but anything is possible because Americans can do anything they put their minds to, emphasis on “minds” and excluding jobs. Later on, while Romney was disappointing America, CNN spent a good portion of the long process of cell degeneration we call life talking about Palin some more, with what little comprehensible English was made available by her mouth yesterday. Conclusion: Sarah Palin is an alive person. Plus, hates misogynists as long as they are liberal.
+++

The "war of realities" has begun - Sarah Palin's reality against the reality of the other 99%, so to speak. The AP reported about the outrage of Sarah Palin's "aides" - the people who are on the payroll of SarahPAC. As was to be expected, Sarah Palin's servants dutifully people rallied around the "Governor" and loudly denounced the upcoming HBO movie "Game Change", with good old trusty Megan "Alaska big mouth" Stapleton even calling the movie "sick":

Interestingly, Frank Bailey described in his book "Blind Allegiance to Sarah Palin" exactly that: The close circle around Sarah Palin was expected to defend Palin under all costs against accusations which quite frequently were directed at Palin. The Governor fumed, raged, screamed, and her subordinates had to defend her honour. Therefore it's like a "deja vu" - and of course it didn't matter that Sarah's busy staffers haven't even seen the movie yet. Sarah has to be defended, period!

It's exactly like the conservative Alaska pundit and former radio-talk show host Dan Fagan wrote in November 2009 in his immortal essay titled "Sarah Palin: A Dark Soul":

She is a grudge carrier. Settling scores drive her and she is hell bent on revenge, payback, getting even. (...)

She has no self-control when it comes to letting things go. She must settle the score. She must. She Will!

So now it's time to settle the score the makers of the "Game Change" movie and the authors of the book. It's that simple. Because everyone lies - apart from Sarah Palin. It has never been any different.

This might come as a surprise to the authors Mark Halperin and John Heilemann. One has just only to watch for example their interview from 15th March 2010 to realise that they probably didn't expect such harsh attacks.

In the following clip from about 46:00, they start to talk about Sarah Palin in detail. Mark Halperin says that the depiction of Sarah Palin is actually "empathetic towards her" and also provides "a very balanced view." But above all, Mark Halperin stresses: "It's all accurate!" - and Halperin even mentions that in contrast other things which have been written about Sarah Palin elsewhere sometimes "have not been accurate."

It's almost amusing to observe that Mark Halperin was apparently under the impression that Sarah Palin is a sane, rational human being. I do hope that he has seen the light now!

The discussion about the upcoming movie "Game Change" is also a good opportunity to take a look at what some of the participants of the 2008 Republican campaign had to say about Sarah Palin. In a very interesting clip from 2010, former Senior McCain-aide Nicolle Wallace didn't hold back - and it sounded like a warning to Sarah Palin. Nicolle Wallace says that people would start to talk about Sarah Palin's "more troubling deficiencies" if she was to become the Republican nominee, "her incredible cynicism, her bitterness, her aggressive attempts to claw anyone that points out an area for her to work on." According to Wallace, "a whole lot of people would stand up and say a whole lot of things."

The interview with Steve Schmidt on "60 Minutes" with Anderson Cooper is also worth revisiting:

In case you would like to know more about Nicolle Wallace, take a look at her appearance at Rutgers University from March 2011 where she talks about her novel "Eighteen Acres" which she wrote after the 2008 campaign - a fictional account about "the first female president":

UPDATE March 12, 2012 (by Patrick):

All Americans, regardless whether they are Republicans or Democrats, today should feel proud of Steve Schmidt, McCain's former senior campaign advisor. Steve Schmidt today gave an absolutely brilliant, brutally honest interview on Morning Joe, which I regard as almost historic. Rarely before have we seen such an honest, straightforward and merciless assessment by a former political player. Just the plain truth, free of party politics and ideology, but driven by regret and feelings of responsibility. Steve Schmidt has shown a lot of courage, and hopefully this will have an impact and change things for the better.

Andrew Sullivan and John McCain believe that Sarah Palin has a chance to beat Obama in 2012 - Palin causing major stir at "Rolling Thunder" (PHOTOS)

By Patrick

If America wants it or not, she is "back." The force of the Palin-propaganda machine is just about to hit the country, and John McCain already appears to rate her as a serious contender. Today on "Fox News Sunday", he said, according to "The Hill":

The GOP’s standard-bearer in 2008 also shrugged off his former running mate’s poor standing in many polls, saying she would have the opportunity to turn that around if she did make a bid for the White House.

“That’s what campaigns are all about,” McCain said on “Fox News Sunday.”

“I’ve never seen anyone as mercilessly and relentlessly attacked as I have seen Sarah Palin in the last couple of years,” the Arizona senator added. “But she also inspires great passion, particularly among the Republican faithful.”

So, she "inspires great passion", and she could "turn that around." Thank you, John McCain! Also for unleashing Queen Esther onto the world, we are incredibly grateful, thank you so much, John. She's just what the world has been waiting for. A warmongering, lying, deceitful, demagogic politician whose main argument is that if you are against her, you are against women and against real American values.

Andrew Sullivan is one of the few journalists who have taken the threat that Sarah Palin poses seriously, and of course he has been ridiculed many times, because she is such a joke, isn't she! Who could possibly take her seriously!

This weekend, he was not afraid to defend his position on the Chris Matthews Show at MSNBC:

From the exchange:

CHRIS MATTHEWS, HOST: Does anybody here really, does anybody imagine Sarah Palin being elected President of the United States?

ANDREW SULLIVAN, DAILY BEAST: Yes.

MATTHEWS: You can.

SULLIVAN: Yes, because…

[LAUGHTER]

GLORIA BORGER, CNN: Uh oh, here it comes.

SULLIVAN: …not because of her apparent virtues, not because of Obama’s weakness, but because of unforeseen events. I do think that if for example we have a collapse in the markets because of a debt ceiling crisis, if we have a second recession…

MATTHEWS: You’re talking Armageddon.

SULLIVAN: If we have another terrorist attack…

BORGER: Sorry.

SULLIVAN: No, I’m just saying we shouldn’t rule out things.

MATTHEWS: Okay, okay, let’s go…

JOE KLEIN, TIME MAGAZINE: You were around, you were around in ’79 and ’80 as I was. Did you see many people in the Carter administration think that Ronald Reagan could beat Jimmy Carter?

MATTHEWS: Okay, let’s imagine that short of an Armageddon moment like the capture of 80 hostages and the humiliation of the United States for year-long and inflation and unemployment like Carter had.

Well, we’ve got the soaring gas and food prices as well as the unemployment. Apparently Obama gives Matthews too much of a thrill up his leg to notice.

Regardless, a few minutes later, the discussion came back to Palin:

MATTHEWS: Okay, let’s go to Palin. Lot of fun here. Palin, you love Palin. In some strange way you’re fascinated by her, Andrew.

SULLIVAN: As I said on the show many times, she started running the day after the 2008 election ended, and there’s no reason to believe she isn’t running.

MATTHEWS: Did she take a smart break the last three or four months so that the Newts and the Trumps make fools of themselves more or less?

SULLIVAN: Her position has been formerly if no one else will represent this grassroots movement of cutting government down to size and standing up for America abroad, then I will have to go in.

MATTHEWS. Anger. She’ll be the anger candidate.

SULLIVAN: Not just the angry candidate. She’ll be the principled candidate against what she will describe as the free…

MATTHEWS: Are you getting her into this race? Are you escorting her into this race?

SULLIVAN: No, no, no, no, no. I’m too terrified for the country to do such a thing. But I don’t, I do think Washington has misread her, underestimated her, and doesn’t see the…

MATTHEWS: Okay, can Palin and Bachmann run both on the right?

KLEIN: Sure they can both run, but I don’t know that either of them can win. But one thing you have to say about Palin: she doesn’t know anything about policy, but she’s got skills. She knows how to be a standup politician.

MATTHEWS: I agree. Great on the stage.

KLEIN: Yeah.

BORGER: But I believe in the end she’s so relentlessly negative that the, the American people don’t like relentlessly negative politicians. Look at Ronald Reagan. Ronald Reagan was optimistic, positive…

SULLIVAN: But “Sarah Palin’s Alaska” is the most – I know it’s completely phony – but it’s very optimistic. This whole “Triumph of the Will” movie she’s putting out there, two hours of total upbeat, optimistic stuff. She, she knows this, and she’s going to work around it.

The right-wingers surely are mightily upset that Andrew Sullivan compared Sarah Palin's upcoming propaganda piece to Leni Riefenstahl's "Triumph of the Will", but so be it. "The Undefeated" will be pure propaganda, and even if it's packed with lies, just as "Going Rogue" was, her fanatical fans will love it, because they want to believe in her. This has nothing to do with rational thinking. What we have is a populist who is willing to use every lie imaginable in order to impress her fans - and the potential voters. This should scare anyone, it's no laughing matter - but I believe that large parts of the media will be very happy to play the "Palin media game", again. She will give them the sound bites, and they will happy to pick them up, because Sarah Palin sells. It would help if the media started to take her seriously. So far, not many people in the media seem to do so, which I believe is a great mistake. Sarah Palin is ruthless, and she is determined. Virtually every move she has made after she resigned as Governor is directed to prepare her upcoming presidential campaign. Therefore, nobody should be surprised, and Americans need to realize what's heading towards them.

Sarah Palin's embarrassing interviews have been around since 2008. But journalists have no excuse any more, when it comes to simply repeating Sarah Palin's lies about her record. They are now in a position to educate themselves, as Geoffrey Dunn's book "The Lies of Sarah Palin" and Frank Bailey's book "Blind Allegiance to Sarah Palin" are packed with facts which are damning.

I was very happy to see that Jack Cafferty highly praised Geoffrey Dunn's book on CNN, saying that it "ought to be required reading for anybody considering supporting a Presidential run by this woman":

Now, I do hope that neither the journalists nor the voters will forget Sarah Palin's disastrous appearances during the 2008 campaign - because one thing is for sure: There will be no more interviews with critical journalists, as Sarah Palin recently announced on Hannity. It will only be propaganda, propaganda, propaganda.

Is the USA prepared for that? I surely hope so, because otherwise we will all be in big, big trouble.

Let's finish this post with Sarah Palin's "Greatest Hits" - we can never see them often enough:

UPDATE:

A new report by the "Washington Post" describes how the appearance of Sarah Palin caused a major stir at the "Rolling Thunder motorcycle ride." Palin did a great job of hijacking the event:

Participants in the annual Rolling Thunder motorcycle ride Sunday expressed mixed feelings about the involvement of former Alaska governor Sarah Palin (R).

Palin, along with husband Todd and daughters Bristol and Piper, joined the hundreds of thousands of riders who gather in D.C. every year to raise awareness for prisoners of war and soldiers missing in action.

Palin’s arrival at the event around 11:30 a.m. caused a huge commotion that event organizers struggled to contain. Photographers swarmed her; young men in suits hung around the press pack asking Palin to sign copies of her books. Rolling Thunder security yelled at press and fans not to touch the expensive bikes.

“I’m very not appreciative of the way she came in here,” Ted Shpak, Rolling Thunder’s national legislative director, said of Palin’s arrival. The former governor came in the front of the Pentagon’s north parking lot, where event staff and press were assembled. “If she wanted to come on the ride, she should have come in the back.”

The ride goes from the Pentagon, past the Vietnam Memorial, to the National Mall. From there, Palin plans to head to the National Archives to see the Constitution. It’s the beginning of a week-long tour of historic sites in the Northeast.

But many riders said politics has no place in the event.

“It intimidates our people if we’re pro or con any particular candidate,” said Wayne Kirkpatrick, chairman of the board of an Illinois chapter of Rolling Thunder. “And until national says there's a candidate we’re and supporting them, we don’t want to feel because the president of this chapter is pro-tea party, ‘Gee, I have to be our else I better get out of this organization.”

While many riders said they were fans of Palin, they still did not want her to bring politics to the ride. “Don’t come here and try to make a political point out of it,” said Joe Clark of Pennsylvania. “If she’s just here backing the cause of the entire run, that’s fine. If she’s just trying to get votes, she should just stay out of it.”

Also, we have the first pictures of Sarah Palin at Rolling Thunder ride, thanks to one of our readers (click to enlarge):

I am sure that the Koch Brothers will be happy to hear that!

UPDATE 3:

Many Americans will not be fooled by Sarah Palin's show, and others are certainly not fooled as well. The UK Daily Mail published a good, also very balanced, article, with lots of pictures and additional information, as well as scathing captions, such as:

"Parade time: Ms Palin waves to the crowd, from the back of a hog...
where she sat for a few minutes"

The Daily Mail writes:
Jim Roddey, chairman of the Allegheny County Republican Committee in Pittsburgh, said: 'Overall, most of us feel she could be an important force in the party, but I would hope she would not run for president.

'I don’t think she has the intellectual capacity or the depth of knowledge to be president.'

She has also been criticised by Maryland’s 2010 GOP gubernatorial nominee, Robert Ehrlich, who called her a quitter and said: 'If you look at the categories of potential nominees, most people do not mention her as a tier-one candidate.'
Palin's problem in the north east is the predominance of suburban swing voters, who are not impressed by her social conservatism and anti-intellectual posturing.
Mr Madonna said: 'The overall style, her manner, her approach, doesn’t sit well with college educated, independent-minded women.

'They’re looking for a different persona in their candidate.'

Geoffrey Dunn -- Upcoming Book Readings in Santa Cruz

By Kathleen

On Wednesday, 26th May at 7.30pm Geoffrey Dunn will read from his book The Lies of Sarah Palin at the Santa Cruz Bookshop, 1520 Pacific Ave., Santa Cruz.

Geoffrey will also hold a further reading, also at 7.30pm, on Thursday, July 14th, in the Capitola Book Cafe, 1475 41st Ave., Capitola.

If you are in the area drop in to one of the readings to have your books signed and please say hi to Geoffrey for us.

Jason Hoppin at Mercury News has asked some interesting questions of Geoffrey about his book. Be sure to read the full interview.

At Politico.com this claim by the Palin camp about Bailey's release of certain emails struck us as curious:

Palin’s camp also insists that some of the Palin emails printed in the manuscript are framed to distort events — for example, the emails Bailey includes to show the former Alaska governor’s reaction to her oldest daughter’s pregnancy are about rumors that circulated before Bristol actually became pregnant.

Politicalgates, thanks to the generosity of a kind reader, has three copies of Frank Bailey's book,
Blind Allegiance to Sarah Palin, to give away to readers who cannot afford their own copy. This time round I will collect requests and pull names from a hat to determine the winners.

Please send your entries to kathleenpoliticalgates@gmail.com

No entries accepted after Wednesday, 25th May, 2011. Good luck to those who enter.

UPDATE: I now have 5 copies of Blind Allegiance to give away so don't forget to put your name forward if you would like the chance to receive a copy.

Interview with Geoffrey Dunn about his upcoming book "The Lies of Sarah Palin - The Untold Story Behind Her Relentless Quest for Power"

By Patrick

We were given the opportunity to interview Geoffrey Dunn about his upcoming book "The Lies of Sarah Palin - The Untold Story Behind Her Relentless Quest for Power." The book will be released on Tuesday, May 10.

Fortunately we were lucky enough to have received an advance copy from the publishers therefore we have already read significant portions of the book and I can assure you that you will not be disappointed if you have ordered a copy. Geoffrey Dunn had access to a huge number of excellent sources, many of whom went on the record, as well as access to a large amount of previously unpublished material. Geoffrey wrote what I consider the ultimate biography of Sarah Palin's political career - starting with her days at Wasilla High School. The book is fact-checked up to the smallest details, and clearly sets a benchmark for all the other books regarding Sarah Palin which are to follow this year. The book is incredibly well written, packed with facts and a great achievement by Geoffrey Dunn.

Short bio, courtesy of St. Martin's Press:

Geoffrey Dunn is an award-winning author and documentary filmmaker with more than three decades experience as an investigative reporter. A frequent contributor to The Huffington Post, where he has broken several national stories on Sarah Palin since the 2008 presidential campaign, Dunn has also served as a Senior Editor for Metro Newspapers in Northern California, where he has received awards for investigative journalism from the National Newspaper Association, the California Newspaper Publishers Association, and the Peninsula Press Club. His documentary films include the award-winning Calypso Dreams; Miss…or Myth?; and Dollar a Day, 10¢ a Dance. Dunn received a B.A. in politics (with honors), as well as an M.A. and Ph.D. in sociology, from the University of California, Santa Cruz, where he has taught courses in documentary film, nonfiction writing and American political history and culture. He received an Excellence in Teaching Award there in 2000. Dunn was raised in an Italian-American fishing community and worked in the Pacific Coast fishery industry until the mid-1980s.

Here are our questions and Geoffrey Dunn's answers:

1. Do you believe that the "parenting techniques" of Chuck Heath, Sarah Palin's father, shaped her entire life, due to his attitude of "win at all costs" and "lie, cheat, steal just to win?"

Dunn: As I note in my book, The Lies of Sarah Palin, I believe that Chuck Heath clearly shaped Sarah Palin’s personality and her world view. The person who has consistently made the harshest comments about Sarah Palin in public interviews has been Chuck Heath. He’s a definitive figure in her life. Recall the moment in “Sarah Palin’s Alaska” where Palin shoots the caribou. That pretty much says it all.

2. What's the most shocking thing you learned about Sarah Palin when you were conducting your investigations?

Dunn: That she openly betrayed John McCain on the campaign trail. If you think about that, it’s “shocking.” But people haven’t really grasped that about Palin’s behavior in 2008. I think that Steve Schmidt gets it—and that’s why he’s spoken out against her behavior during the McCain campaign. He is an extremely loyal figure. He gets it.

That said, nothing—nothing—shocks me any more about Palin. Nothing.

3. During your trip to Alaska, did you find that most people were reluctant to answer questions about her and her direct family, and if so, why do you think that was?

Dunn: I had the opportunity to meet several people who knew Palin in Alaska. Some people were afraid. And they have reason to be afraid. But I developed the trust of most of my sources. I think I have something like 60 different people on-the-record from Alaska. They are not afraid of Palin. Many people told me the Heath-Palin clan are bullies—but that they don’t have the guts to challenge people themselves. Some people likened them to the mafia. I don’t give them that power.

4. Why do you think Sarah Palin never speaks about her mother?

Dunn: I really don’t know. And I don’t want to venture a guess.

Geoffrey Dunn

5. Do you think that Sarah Palin has committed any acts for which she should have been prosecuted, and if so, why do you think she escaped prosecution for them.

Dunn: It’s my belief that Palin was not entirely forthcoming with investigators around Troopergate. But even though she gave sworn testimony, my attempts to get her deposition were thwarted by the Alaska Attorney General’s office. There’s no transparency in Alaska government. There is a culture of corruption. So I can’t say with certainty that she committed perjury, but I suspect that she did. I would hope that authorities in Alaska would re-open the Troopergate investigation and explore this issue. I did have one of Frank Bailey’s sworn statements leaked to me. There appear to be discrepancies between that statement and what he said in the leaked draft of his forthcoming book. Palin’s minions protected her. But if Barry Bonds can be brought to trial over his testimony about taking steroids for a baseball game, then surely the Governor of Alaska should be held accountable for sworn testimony that she gave about abuse of power.

6. In your book you explain on pp. 56, 57 that Sarah Palin had filled out an application form for the position of police dispatcher in March 1996. In this signed form, Sarah Palin declared that the information is "true or complete to the best of my knowledge." Sarah Palin listed in this form solely the University of Idaho where she indicated that she had completed five years with a course of study "Political Science/Journalism." The document was notarized on March 12, 1996.

On her resume accompanying the application, she mentions that she completed a "minor in political science" and also added "political science studies" to her list of "specialized training." Then comes a more curious representation, as you explain in your book: Under "graduate professional" education she declared "post-grad general studies" for one year, despite there being no record for her to have ever done so.

(Note by Patrick: In his interview at the Firedoglake Book Salon yesterday, Geoffrey Dunn explained that this document was leaked to him).

Our readers at Politicalgates have had many questions about Sarah Palin's education. Giving the fact that Sarah Palin distorted her education in this form which you mention in your book, do you believe that her "official" story regarding her university education is credible, or do you believe that there could be more distortions in the story the general public currently believes to be true?

Dunn: As I said in my interview on Firedoglake, I challenge Ms. Palin to release her academic records—and I will release mine. I have narrative evaluations for every class I took. Let’s release the documents.

I spoke to an official at the University of Idaho who told me that Palin graduated. She would not confirm a minor. But Palin clearly misrepresented the truth on that application. No one else ever found that application—and it was part of a public trial. Why not? Beats me. But as I said, I don’t trust anything Sarah Palin says anymore. Niente.

Her “D,” by the way, was in micro-economics. And she has the gall to challenge Obama’s handling of the economy? She is self-delusional. She is a fraud. She and Todd couldn’t run their own little snowmachine business. And her marketing and consulting company, “ Rouge Cou,” which means “red neck,” never got off the ground.

7. If you could name the "top three victims" of Sarah Palin, who would they be, and why?

Dunn: 1. John McCain. Because his reputation will always be tainted by her selection. And she destroyed his chance of ever becoming president. Of course, he was careless and reckless in his choosing of her, so I feel no empathy toward him whatsoever. Karma’s a bitch. 2. Walt Monegan. Here’s a guy who’s a lifelong patriot; his father gave up his life for this country; and she sacrificed his career over a personal vendetta against Mike Wooten. Then lied about it. 3. Her children. They will never know what normal is. Ever. Any of them. Celebrity comes with a heavy price tag attached. And Palin’s with a particularly burdensome load.

Let me also add the American people. Palin’s viciousness and her politics of anger on the campaign trail forever changed the tone of American political discourse. She has unleashed the dark side of the American psyche and has given body to the right-wing, racist hatred of talk radio. So in a sense, we have all been victims—across the political spectrum.

8. What do you think were the most disturbing incidents from the point of view of members of the McCain/Palin campaign during the time when Sarah Palin ran for Vice-President?

Dunn: When she knowingly betrayed McCain and brought in Reverend Wright to the campaign—for which she was utterly unapologetic in Going Rogue. And then for her charging with Obama for palling around with terrorists and not being like “us.” It’s a shameful, racist moment in American history. And of course many Republicans still celebrate her for doing so. But I consider it an act of treason. And I mean that. It violates everything this country stands for.

9. What do you think were possible reasons why Sarah Palin stepped back from the Governorship? Does any one reason strike you as being significant?

Dunn: Great question. In my book, I lead up to this decision and provide a variety of variables that led to it. She was besieged from many quarters. But I suspect a big reason, as I note in the book, was Andree McLeod and the ethics complaints she was filing. Palin knew McLeod. They had once been political allies. Close political allies. McLeod provided me access to an email or two that illustrates this closeness. And Palin had to know that McLeod was tougher and smarter and more tenacious than her. In Alaska, McLeod is often demonized for her efforts. But had it not been for Andree, we would never had known the full details of Palin’s governorship. And I doubt that she would have resigned. She probably wouldn’t have run for a second term. But Palin knew what she was up against with Andree. And like Roberto Duran in his immortal bout against Sugar Ray Leonard, she quit. She said “no mas.” I mean, that in itself should disqualify her from ever holding office again.

You know, we all keep looking for the deep-dark secret in the Palin archive. And they keep popping up. But really, the most shocking material about Palin is the stuff we already know. I made that point about the birth of Trig. Her resignation. Her betrayal of McCain. Troopergate. Her erratic, dysfunctional mayorship in Wasilla. It’s already there. We know it.

10. What were the most surprising things you learned about Sarah Palin while doing the research for your book?

Dunn: Like I said, nothing surprises me any more. But when I read Going Rogue—which came out after I had conducted considerable research—and I read her renditions of her marriage, and her parents’ marriage—and I realized these were myths she had constructed to cover up the fact that three generations of her family had been pregnant outside of marriage—including herself, of course, which she has hidden—the appalling hypocrisy of her being an advocate for abstinence just sort of floored me. Because people in Wasilla talked knowingly of it. But like I said, nothing surprises me any more. And nothing will. A little while ago, she lied about the weather. She lies about everything.

That said, and what I think’s important about my book is that all of this is told between two covers. And placed in context. And as one reviewer said, which I liked very much, is that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. That is, when you take all of the lies of Sarah Palin together in a single narrative arc, it makes for a very disturbing portrait — one McCain aide called it “devastating”— and I think that’s the strength of the book.

You know, I also discovered that Palin unleashed her minions after me in the summer of 2009 after I realized she had lifted passages about Ronald Reagan from an obscure Newt Gingrich and Craig Shirley article. Had one of my students done anything like that, they would have been kicked out of the university. I’d love to know if Alaska taxpayer dollars—or equipment—were used in that effort. I suspect they were. Just as they were used to go after Mike Wooten.

Many thanks to Geoffrey Dunn! We are all incredibly grateful for his efforts and the opportunity for this interview!
