Emily’s List recognized the outstanding contributions of Congresswoman Gabby Giffords in an awards night this week.  Giffords continues to be an inspiration as she recovers from the horrific shooting in January 2011.  The video is a beautiful tribute to her, showing her dedication to her constituents as well as her indomitable spirit.  The post includes a bonus link to the new HBO show VEEP, starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus – check it out and see if she may have drawn inspiration for the role from anyone you know…

John Boehner and others pretend not to know what people mean by the GOP War on Women.  As if all the other evidence is not enough, thirty-one GOP Senators voted against the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act.  This act, originally drafted by then-Senator Biden and others, has been reauthorized several times since it was first enacted in 1994, including by unanimous vote; but now, bowing to Republican extremism, the GOP men once again showed their disdain for women by opposing this legislation.  Kathleen names names, and most of the usual suspects are on the list.  I am glad to report that some people are becoming disenchanted with this extremism; here is a good article from the Washington Post saying bluntly that it is the Republicans who are the problem Kathleen also reminded us of the marches around the country to oppose the War on Women.  (Don’t get mad; get even. Vote.)

Time to lighten up a little!  President Obama is a guy who likes to have a little fun, and he’s not above making himself the butt of the joke – and friends and foes alike as well.  So it was on Saturday night, as he opened with a reference to the raid on the bin Laden compound in Pakistan that was taking place at the same time as the jokes and drinks were flowing at last year’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner.  Except Donald Trump was once again the First Goat.  He was not alone -- Democrats and Republicans alike, and even a few dogs got into the act.  Adding to the hilarity was a great and very rare mention by the President of Sarah Palin – hahahaha, she is probably still stewing and plotting some Twitter or Facebook revenge!  Enjoy a good laugh at her expense…

Some Comments and Links:

Azure Ghost (in response to Palin’s Earth Day screed):  Sounds like Palin supports giving Mother Earth forced transvaginal ultrasounds.

Brownfox:  I find the whole concept of there being more than one churches absurd. All of them believe in a God, believe Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, and yet bicker among themselves over silly matters, neglecting the core of Jesus' message - peace and love and personal purity and integrity.  Maybe that is why the kind Lord has to send somebody every now and then with messages relevant for the current times. He sent us Gandhi, sent you Martin Luther King Jr,... His compassion is endless, and nearly so is our stupidity! :-(

Juicyfruityy found this on DailyKosJoe Biden's bumper sticker: 'bin Laden's dead and General Motors is alive'

Psalm023:  When I see Mitt and Marc Rubio standing together, they look to me like Batman and Robin.

Peacepax (picking up on cheeriogirl’s comment): "GOP has declared war on kids, students, the poor, middle class, those of us with pre-existing condition and our veterans!"  Sounds like the GOP has declared war on the USA

Linda:  Two must read articles:   The New York Times .....TheAmnesia Candidate by Paul Krugman
New York Magazine.........How conservatives donors are buying this Presidential election....GOP Sugar Daddies..........By Frank Rich

Older_Wiser2 pointed out this Rolling Stoneinterview with President Obama and this important 2-part Frontline documentary on the globalfinancial crisis.

alwaysthink found this: enjoy!

maelewis pointed this out about RickSantorum aborting his campaign!

juicyfruityy, from Malia Litman:  An Inconvenient Truth: Abuse of Women by the Military and Secret Service is Rampant, Tolerated, and Part of the Culture April 26, 2012  http://malialitman.wordpress.c...

HonestyinGov linked to Mitt Romney, AmericanParasite.

Sassy pointed out this excellent article: Plutocrats Deserve Public Scorn.

The Last Word:  from President Eisenhower’s Farewell Address (H/T cheeriogirl):
Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, signifies in the final sense a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed.
Here in America we are descended in blood and in spirit from revolutionists and rebels – men and women who dare to dissent from accepted doctrine. As their heirs, may we never confuse honest dissent with disloyal subversion.
I find war detestable but those who praise it without participating in it even more so.
We will bankrupt ourselves in the vain search for absolute security.
When people speak to you about a preventive war, you tell them to go and fight it. After my experience, I have come to hate war.

Special request from Kathleen:

I think that most readers will remember Ann Strongheart, one of the Alaskan "Anonymous Bloggers" who amongst other things  helped arrange the dispersal of tons of food packages to various communities during the food crisis that hit west rural Alaska in early 2009. The huge humanitarian disaster was due to a combination of extreme weather and high fuel prices. This was the humanitarian crisis that Sarah Palin did her best to ignore until she was forced to make an appearance with her good friend Franklin Graham.  Palin's solution to the problems facing rural Alaska was to advise young people to leave their villages to find temporary work. You can read a good synopsis of the crisis here.

Since the tragic death of her husband, Segundo, Ann has left blogging behind and has focused her energies on bringing up her two daughters CeCe, who is autistic, and Glenna. On Saturday May 5, Ann, CeCe and Glenna are participating in a fundraiser activity to raise money for Hope Community Resources which helps children with disabilities. They are anxious to support the organisation because CeCe and the family have benefited from it and they want to be able to give back a little.

If you would like to support Ann, CeCe and Glenna in their efforts please click on this link which will take you to Ann's personal fundraising page on the Hope community Resources website and click on the sponsor me button. In the past Ann has contributed a lot of her time and energy towards helping others and she is still doing so. All the money raised stays in Alaska, none of the fund raised dollars go towards salaries but directly benefit the lives of people who choose Hope's services.

UPDATE: Message from CeCe

"I am Cecelia Strongheart.  I am 4 1/2 years old and I am developmentally disabled.  I am just one of the people the Hope Community Resources help everyday.  Please sponsor me and my mom and sister for this walk.  My sister and I have been building our stamina nearly everyday out walking with Mommy.  I can now walk 3 miles and my 2 year old sister is up to 2 miles a day.  We are excited about this walk and hope that you can sponsor us. I need your help to get closer to my goal!"
